Chandigarh, April 11 (IANS) Twentysix people were arrested Monday in Haryana’s Sirsa district for attempting to smuggle cattle out of the state, a police spokesman said here.

He said that a police team, led by inspector Balwant Singh, intercepted and seized seven mini-trucks full of cows and calves at Bathinda Chowk near Dabwali town.

The seizure was made following a tip-off that the cattle were being smuggled out to a place in neighbouring Punjab, police said.

The accused have been booked under the Cattle Atrocities (Prevention) Act. The law bars transportation of cattle to other states in large numbers without permission, police said.

The seized cows and calves have been sent to a cowshed in Dabwali.
