May 10th, 2011 - 10:15 pm ICT by IANSRaipur, May 10 (IANS) A 25-kg landmine laid under a key road in Chhattisgarh’s restive Bastar region was detected and defused Tuesday, police said.
“A squad of the district force and the paramilitary troopers spotted a landmine in Kanker district. The 25-kg landmine was laid to target the police party,” Kanker police chief Ajay Yadav told reporters. The landmine was defused immediately, he added.
Kanker is part of the sprawling 40,000 sq km Bastar region along with Bijapur, Bastar, Dantewada and Narayanpur districts. The Maoist rebels hold sway in the region’s forested interiors since the late 1980s.
