Mo Nique Bangkok, Feb 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Nominees: Penelope Cruz, Nine; Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air; Maggie Gyllenhaal, Crazy Heart; Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air; Mo’Nique, Precious.

Funnily enough, the Best Supporting Actress category this year is much the same as the Best Supporting Actor one in that there’s really only one name that everyone is talking about. To get past the elimination round: Farmiga and Kendrick were in the same movie, which voters usually shy away from, and Cruz is one of the only standouts in a movie that was largely ignored. A long shot would be Gyllenhaal, who holds her own against likely winner Jeff Bridges, but while all the nominees pulled some powerhouse emoting out of the bag in some very great movies, it’s Mo’Nique’s shocking, powerful performance as an abusive, conflicted mother that came out of nowhere and sucker punched everyone.

Greg Jorgensen has been scouring the back alleys and lurking in the movie theaters of Bangkok since 2001. His biggest regret is getting a Gold Class ticket for Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones.
