June 20th, 2011 - 12:33 pm ICT by IANSBogota, June 20 (IANS) At least 17 were wounded in a car bomb explosion in a Colombian city, authorities said here Sunday.
The blast occurred in the Colombian city of Popayan around Saturday midnight, near a bridge where a group of people were celebrating the triumph of the football team Atletico Nacional at Colombia’s soccer championship, Xinhua reported Monday.
Police blamed the rebel ELN (National Liberation Army) for the terrorist act, which also destroyed 15 homes and left 15 districts without electricity.
A middle-aged driver was arrested by police who stopped the car bomb at a checkpoint before it reached its intended destination — the city’s downtown, said Orlando Pineda, a regional police commander.
