17 killed in Sikkim landslides (Second Lead)
June 24th, 2011 - 10:32 pm ICT by IANSGangtok, June 24 (IANS) Landslides triggered by rains have killed at least 17 people in Sikkim since Thursday night, police said Friday.
The landslides occurred around 11.30 p.m. at three places in Sikkim’s West district, the state’s Deputy Inspector General of Police N. Sridhar Rao told IANS on phone.
Another person was killed in Sikkim’s South district in a landslide Friday morning.
“The fire brigade, SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal) and other agencies are carrying out rescue operations,” Rao added.
“All 17 people were killed in landslides. Fourteen bodies have been recovered so far,” said a senior police official.
The state has been experiencing incessant rains since Thursday evening.
