16 killed in Sikkim landslides (Lead)
June 24th, 2011 - 7:47 pm ICT by IANSGangtok, June 24 (IANS) At least 16 people have been killed in Sikkim in landslides at several places triggered by heavy rains since Thursday night, police said Friday.
The landslides occurred around 11.30 p.m. at three places in Sikkim’s West district, the state’s Deputy Inspector General of Police N. Sridhar Rao told IANS on phone.
“Sixteen people were killed in the landslides. Eight bodies have been recovered so far,” Rao said.
“The fire brigade, SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal) and other agencies are carrying out rescue operations,” Rao added.
The state has been experiencing incessant rains since Thursday evening.
Another person is feared dead in Sikkim’s South district in a landslide Friday morning.
