1,500 evacuated after river dike burst in China

Wuhan (China), Aug 16 (Xinhua) Some 1,500 people have been evacuated after a river dike burst in China’s central province of Hubei, officials said. The dam burst at around 11 p.m. Friday. The river water has submerged around 300 homes besides croplands, the provincial flood control authorities said.

Rescue officials and local residents are trying to plug the breached section with sandbags, it said.

Heavy rain has lashed the province since Wednesday, affecting some 360,000 people. The adverse weather conditions has caused economic loss of 113 million yuan ($16.4 million).
