14 Mumbai cops suspended for framing businessman

Mumbai, March 10 (IANS) Former additional commissioner of Mumbai police Bipin Bihari and 13 officers of the Juhu police station were suspended Monday night for trying to frame a city developer in a false case. Director General of Police (DGP) A.N. Roy passed the suspension order after the state criminal investigation department (CID) submitted its report on the case.

Rajendra Chaturvedi was accused of plotting to murder rival developer Rashmikant Shah following which a case was registered against him at the Juhu police station in February last year.

Both developers were vying for a Rs.5 billion slum redevelopment project in central Mumbai.

Following the registration of the case, Chaturvedi was arrested in March 2007 and was released on bail after 40 days.

The 13 police officers who have been suspended are: senior police inspector Pradeep Shinde, inspector Babasaheb Kade, assistant police inspectors Jagdish Sahil, Ramesh Nangre, Kumar Sawant, Vijay Thumal, Dheeraj Korli, Vijay Dhatrak and constables Bala Thangre, Arvind Phadtare, Dattatray Shinde and P. Suryavanshi.
