14 dead in China floods

Beijing, Sep 20 (IANS) At least 14 people have died and more than three million people affected in rain-triggered floods in a southwestern Chinese province, authorities said.

At least 11 people were still missing till Monday.

Economic loss in Sichuan province totalled around six billion yuan (around $937.5 million). More than 16,700 hectares of crops have been affected by rains. Floods toppled 31,000 houses across the province, Xinhua reported citing a government statement.

The flood control office has sent special teams to the province to help out in relief operations, while rescuers were searching for the missing people.

In Bazhong, Dazhou and Guang’an cities in the province, over one million people have been evacuated in one of the worst floods since official records began in 1847.
