13-year-old maid commits suicide

Noida, July 28 (IANS) A 13-year-old maid working with a retired government doctor here committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan, police said Monday. The girl was found hanging in the bathroom of house number G-152 Sector-41 Noida. In violation of child labour laws, the doctor had engaged the child on June 10 and held her under detention.
Anil Samania, station officer of sector-39 police station, said Anju Haldhar, a resident of Malda in West Bengal, was working as a maid for Vishnu Kumar, a retired medical superintendent of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital in Delhi.
Vishnu Kumar, his wife and driver Bhag Chand left the house in the morning. Before going to work at Nehru Place, the doctor locked the girl from outside. When they returned home at 2.30 p.m., they found the girl hanging from the ceiling fan of the bathroom.
A case has been registered and the body of the girl sent for post-mortem, the police official added.
