13 Pandharpur pilgrims crushed by a speeding truck
July 25th, 2011 - 9:03 pm ICT by IANSJalna (Maharashtra), July 25 (IANS) Thirteen people were killed and more than 25 were injured as a speeding container truck lost control and crushed a group of pilgrims, walking to the famous temple of Pandharpur in this Maharashtra district, police said.
“The accident took place on Ambad-Beed road. The driver lost control of the truck and crushed the Warkaris (pilgrims walking in a procession to Pandharpur),” an official from Ambad police station told IANS.
The driver of the truck belonging to Haryana escaped after the accident and is untraced. The angry locals set the abandoned vehicle on fire.
“We are in the process of identifying those dead and injured. The dead bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination,” the official said.
