May 16th, 2011 - 11:12 am ICT by IANSMexico City, May 16 (IANS/EFE) At least 13 people, including four police officers, were killed in a shootout on a highway in Guerrero, a state in southern Mexico, officials said Sunday.
The incident occurred Saturday when a group of police special operations unit officers engaged a convoy of gunmen on the Acapulco-Zihuatanejo highway, the Guerrero Public Safety Secretariat said.
The gunmen, who were travelling in at least five vehicles, battled the police officers for nearly 90 minutes.
Police seized five vehicles, 16 assault rifles, three grenades, 2,000 rounds of ammunition, bullet-proof vests and military-style uniforms after the shootout.
Mexico has been plagued in recent years by drug-related violence blamed on powerful cartels.
