13 Aligarh University students booked for rioting
October 28th, 2009 - 1:19 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Oct 28 (IANS) Thirteen students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have been booked for rioting, manhandling government officials and damaging public property during their violent protests against the murder of a varsity student, police said Wednesday.
The case against the 13 students and nearly 50 unidentified people was registered Tuesday night at the Civil Lines Police station, they said.
“As the students have already carried out violent demonstrations, we need to arrest them and adopt measures that prevent any fresh violence in the district. As the arrest of students can make their colleagues more violent, we need to be extra vigilant. Efforts are on to arrest those booked for rioting,” police inspector Ghanshyam Singh told IANS.
Agitated over the murder of Shahnawaz, a final year B.Sc student who was shot dead Sunday night by assailants following a petty issue related to parking of a vehicle, hundreds of students have taken to the streets.
Though no major violence was reported Tuesday during the protests by the varsity students, they did indulge in vandalism, disrupt rail traffic, damage public vehicles and also pelted stones at the police.
During their protest, the students also tried to disrupt official and academic activities at AMU.
The angry students are demanding that those involved in the murder should be handed over to them.
Police believe the murder involved two to three men and have already arrested one Kallu Khan in connection with the incident.
