The accident took place late Monday in Jagdishpur town in Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar, about 125 km from here, when the goods carrier vehicle carrying the passengers spun out of control and rammed into the tree.
“While six people died on the spot, the other six succumbed to their injuries Tuesday while being treated at a hospital. The condition of 16 injured is stated to be critical,” police inspector Anil Rai told reporters in the district.
“The accident took place probably because the vehicle was overloaded with passengers. There were around 50 people in the vehicle,” he added.
Police said the passengers were returning home to Sultanpur district from a temple in the state’s Kaushambhi district.
