10 killed in road accident in Punjab (Lead)
February 28th, 2009 - 9:40 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Barnala (Punjab), Feb 28 (IANS) At least 10 people were killed and 25 were injured when two buses collided in Punjab, police said Saturday.
The accident occurred when a state transport bus travelling towards Faridkot from Barnala, about 150 km from Chandigarh, swerved sharply to avoid a two-wheeler and hit a mini bus coming from the opposite direction Friday night, police said.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Shiv Kumar, the accident occurred near Cheema Jodhpur village in Barnala district.
The dead included a woman, Kumar told IANS. Six of the 25 injured are in critical condition.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal announced compensation of Rs.100,000 for the family members of the deceased and Rs.50,000 for those seriously injured. He also assured free treatment for those admitted to hospital.
