10 killed in Mathura train accident (Lead)
October 21st, 2009 - 10:15 am ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Agra, Oct 21 (IANS) At least 10 people were reportedly killed and over a dozen injured when two passenger trains collided early Wednesday morning in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura city, officials said.
The accident occurred at about 5:00 a.m. when the Goa Express rammed into the stationary Mewar Express from behind at an outer signal, about 55 km from here. Both the trains were headed for Delhi.
About 50 people are believed to be still trapped in a mangled carriage of the Mewar Express, an official told IANS.
Railway traffic on the busy Delhi-South and Delhi-West has been affected as a result of the accident. Several trains have been diverted and the Intercity Express from Agra to Hazrat Nizamuddin has been cancelled. Further, Taj Expres and the Shatabdi from Delhi are likely to be delayed, the official added.
Senior railway officials, including divisional railway manager (north central zone) R.M. Tripathi, have reached the site to monitor rescue and relief operations.
