10 killed in Bihar temple stampede (Lead)
October 17th, 2010 - 12:15 pm ICT by IANSPatna, Oct 17 (IANS) A stampede killed 10 people, including four women, at a Durga temple in Bihar’s Banka district where more than 30,000 people had gathered to sacrifice goats on the occasion of Navratri, police said Sunday.
Sixteen people were also injured in the stampede at the Durga temple in Tildiha village, about 200 km from here, late Saturday.
Terming it as an accident, a Banka district official said: “The stampede broke out after rumours spread that a portion of the temple had collapsed.”
The injured devotees have been admitted to a hospital for treatment, a police official said.
The state disaster management department has announced a compensation of Rs.1 lakh each for the kin of those dead.
