Thailand and Laos agree to cooperate rail transport to reduce costsSeptember 29th, 2008 - 11:17 am ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
Thailand and Laos have agreed to cooperate on rail transport in an effort to reduce logistics costs.
Deputy Minister of Commerce Pichet Tuncharoen (พิเชษฐ์ ตันเจริญ) revealed that a recent visit to the Lao People’s Republic, by representatives of businesses and investors, found that cooperation on rail transport would help to reduce logistics costs. Deputy Minister of Transport Srithong Thongkaew (ศรีธง ทองแก้ว) said that the development of rail cooperation would reduce transport costs by 1/3 when compared with transport through the use of automobiles.
Thailand has offered to establish a central commerce post for the Laotian railway as Thailand’s private sector is ready to handle such a matter. The suggestion is awaiting allowance from the Lao government. Thailand has also granted 10 scholarships to Laotian students to study logistics in Thailand.
Both Thailand and Laos at this initial stage have agreed to establish a committee to oversee the rail cooperation. For more information on call 1385 or visit www.dft.go.th.
