Thai violence continues as ‘red shirt’ leaders surrender
May 19th, 2010 - 6:42 pm ICT by BNO NewsBANGKOK (BNO NEWS) — Thai troops reclaimed part of the area occupied by “red shirt” protesters on Wednesday, using armored personnel carriers to destroy barricades, but violence has escalated despite the surrender of some red shirt leaders.
At least five people were killed and 64 injured in the operation, including an Italian journalist.
Director of Police Hospital Jongjet Aoajenpong confirmed the Italian reporter was shot in the stomach and died before arriving at the hospital, according to The Bangkok Post.
A Government spokesman said in a televised address that the operation to secure Lumpini Park area was successful, but clashes have continued; several buildings are on fire, including a TV station.
A curfew was declared from 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday night to 6:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.
