Senate Speaker says mediation team may need time to remedy political situation

September 8th, 2008 - 3:33 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi -

At 10:30 AM today at the Parliament, a meeting between the Senate Speaker, House Speaker and Leader of the Opposition took place in an attempt to decipher a end to the ongoing political conflict. The meeting is the result of a decision last week to allow Senate Speaker Prasop Boondet (ประสพสุข บุญเดช) to mediate discussions.

The Senate Speaker declined to state if the discussions were successful but admitted that the situation will require time and effort. He said that the leaders of the People’s Alliance for Democracy have yet joined in negotiations but efforts are being made to contact them and initiate dialogue. Mr. Prasopsuk affirmed that if the negotiations are to be successful, all sides must be open to reason and said that the most pressing matter for negotiations now is the matter of time.

Following the morning’s meeting, the Senate Speaker will attend another gathering which will include members of the coalition government as well as the Prime Minister. He said that if the government is not satisifed by the legislation’s work toward a solution, it may decide to withdraw the responsibility.
