Prime Minister declares state of emergency in BangkokSeptember 2nd, 2008 - 10:02 am ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
NBT reports that Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej has declared a state of emergency, obligating all government work to be conducted according to emergency protocols in Bangkok. The declaration is a response to clashes between the People’s Alliance for Democracy and the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship which occurred last night. The Prime Minister views the clashes as detrimental to the nation’s peace and stability as well its democracy. He said he would seek to resolve the situation as soon as possible.
The declaration has entrusted the Army Commander as the head of overseeing its stipulations are met, the commander will be seconded by the National Police Commander and their roles will continue until the situation returns to normal.
Gatherings of 5 or more people or any acts considered as provoking unrest have been banned. The media is not to portray the situation in such a way as to incite panic and citizens may only use designated roadways and vehicles. Citizens are to be evacuated from all major buildings and use only designated structures.
