PM public address on political situation via FM 96.5
September 4th, 2008 - 4:40 pm ICT by Amrit RashmisrisethiThe Prime Minister conducted a broadcast through the FM 96.5 radio station to report on the government’s plans to resolve the nation’s political situation.
Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said through the FM 96.5 radio channel that the government’s measures to resolve Thailand’s political situation will be remembered for years to come. Mr. Samak admits that he did not expect the demontration situation to escalate to the point of casualties among People’s Alliance for Democracy and Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship members.
Mr. Samak believed that the PAD’s demonstrations against the government was due to their dislike for former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra (ทักษิณ ชินวัตร). Mr. Samak said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was suppose to handle the revocation of Mr. Thaksin’s diplomatic passport but instead avoided the matter by passing on responsibility to him.
The Prime Minister said the implementation of the Emergency Decree was due to the need to allow police and military forces greater authority in controlling the nation’s political situation. He affirms that the decree will not affect the daily lifestyle of Bangkok residents. Mr. Samak reveals that he has discussed the matter with the Army Commander in Chief and has resolved to not allow demonstrators’ threats to influence his decisions.
The Prime Minister adds that the Emergency Decree will remain in effect for only a short period. He is confident that the political situation will resolve itself naturally.
