PM clarifies need for emergency decree in Bangkok
September 2nd, 2008 - 11:51 am ICT by Amrit RashmisrisethiPrime Minister and Minister of Defense Samak Sundaravej held a press conference at the Royal Thai Army Headquarters on the Emergency Decree currently taking effect in Bangkok. The PM said that the decision was made as it is the most non-forceful approach possible to resolve the nation’s situation. He said that the decision needed to be made following clashes between the People’s Alliance for Democracy and the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship.
The PM affirmed that the emergency decree would not stand for a long period of time and asked that citizens comply with decree. He promised that responsible authorities would operate according to law, and that a specially formed committee would decide on the time frame for the decree.
As for the Bangkok Governor Election, the PM said that in a few days candidates will be able to continue their campaigns. He said that he would meet with the Election Commission to discuss rescheduling the election within an acceptable time frame.
