New interim Metropolitan Police Commander orders police at rally site to only use shieldsSeptember 1st, 2008 - 1:00 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
Deputy National Police Commander, Police General Jongrak Chuthanon(จงรัก จุฑานนท์) paid respects to a shrine at the Metropolitan Police Headquarters to mark his interim position as Metropolitan Police Commander. The interim commander assured that he would hold to the Prime Minister’s policy of non-violence against demonstrating groups.
Police General Jongrak stated that he will order all security officers at rally sites to only use shields against the rally and expressed confidence the shift would not affect morale. The commanding officer directly related to the rally however continues to be Deputy Metropolitan Commander, Police Major General Suchart Muankaew (สุชาติ เหมือนแก้ว).
The interim commander said that a recent bombing incident of a police booth at the Pracha Kasem Intersection was the act of a third party seeking to incite chaos. The incident is currently being investigated.
Police General Jongrak also took the time to ask Government Agencies threatening to cut off power and water utilities to government buildings to consider citizens, especially near the National Police Office as there is a hospital in the area.
