More than 100 rai of paddy fields in Phichit damaged by inundationSeptember 15th, 2008 - 3:55 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
Farmers in Sak Lek (สากเหล็ก) district in Phichit province quickly planted rice seeds in more than 100 rai of paddy fields following inundation caused by flood water from Wang Thong (วังทอง) district in Phitsanulok.
The price of rice harvested from the paddy fields will be lower than the normal rice as it contains high humidity. The farmers say they decided to harvest the rice as the flood condition may get worse. The flood water level in the paddy fields has reached 40 centimeters. Apart from the paddy fields, the flood condition has affected mango orchards in Sak Lek district, prompting the farmers to speed up releasing water from the orchards to prevent root rot.
In Mueang district, Sukhothai province, farmers have also harvested their rice due to heavy rain during the last 2-3 days. Sukhothai Governor Wanchai Suthin (วันชัย สุทิน) warns residents living on the banks of Yom River to be on the alert for flash flood. Water from Lam Nam Ngao (ลำน้ำงาว) River in Lampang province is expected to reach Yom River at the speed of 1,010 cubic meters per second in these 2-3 days.
