July 25th, 2008 - 11:06 am ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
Interior Minister Police Captain Chalerm Yubamrung expressed concern for the North Eastern region of the nation, which is majority support for the People Power Party. His concerns were expressed following clashes between the People’s Alliance for Democracy and local rival groups in Udornthani province. The minister said that the PAD’s multi-pronged strategy made it difficult to adequately control the situation and opened them up to intervention from third parties. He nevertheless, affirmed that the Government is still able to handle the situation.
Police Captain Chalerm also commented that the recent clashes might affect his position during the upcoming Cabinet Reshuffle. He quipped that even if he had done his job perfectly, he would not be able to remedy such issues. He asked that the media desist from asking him about the reshuffle as it is the Prime Minister’s decision.
The Interior Minister said that he will attempt to continue negotiations with PAD leader Sonthi Limthongkul, despite being rejected communication once before.
