Interior Minister concerned over clashes in Northeast
July 26th, 2008 - 1:42 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
The Interior Minister, Pol. Capt. Chalerm Yubamrung, expressed concern for the situation of northeastern Thailand, where many people support the People Power Party. His concerns were expressed following clashes between the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) and local rival groups in Udon Thani province. He said the PAD’s multi-pronged strategy made it difficult to adequately control the situation and opened them up to intervention from third parties. He, nevertheless, affirmed that the Government is still able to handle the situation.
Pol. Capt. Chalerm also commented that the recent clashes might affect his position during the upcoming Cabinet reshuffle. He quipped that even if he had done his job perfectly, he would not be able to remedy such issues. He asked that the media desist from asking him about the reshuffle as it is the Prime Minister’s decision.
The Interior Minister said he will attempt to continue negotiations with the PAD leader, Mr. Sondhi Limthongkul, despite being rejected communication once before.
