Garlic Smuggling from China

The Department of Internal Trade plans to put garlic as one of the controlled products to prevent people from smuggling cheap garlic from China.

Mr. Yanyong Puangrach, the Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, says the Thai government has found people illegally bringing in garlic from China because they are less expensive. As a result, garlic produced in northern Thailand could not be sold and their prices have to be lowered.

After putting garlic as a control product, traders must notify the authority about the delivery of their goods to prevent garlic smuggling. At the same time, major retailers in Thailand will help buy garlic from Thai farmers to stabilize the market mechanism.
