FM says Thailand and Cambodia to use restraint for time being
July 29th, 2008 - 3:16 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
Newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs Tej Bunnag (เตช บุนนาค) stated after returning from talks with Cambodia that both nations have agreed to exercise restraint in dealing with border conflicts as to evade any possible confrontation and military action. He assured that Thailand and Cambodia will continue bilateral relations between government ministers and revealed that his ministry will push for the government to call a meeting of the General Border Committee as soon as possible. The government may also be asked to instate temporary measures that will not affect the rights of either country along the border to help ease tensions during negotiations. Mr. Tej said that some remaining points will be brought up at a later discussion.
The Foreign Affairs Minister said that some of the temporary measures will include the retrieval of mines from the conflicted area, organizing a collaboration team and also reducing military presence; especially in areas such as Phrea Vihear National Park.
