Election Commissioner unsure whether referendum can end political turmoil

September 5th, 2008 - 11:32 am ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi -

Election Commissioner Praphan Naikowit says he is unsure whether the Referendum Act can resolve the ongoing political problems and estimates that the drafting of the Act may take at least 6-7 months.

Mr Praphan says it depends on the premier to decide whether to approve MPs’ proposal on the use of referendum and the Senate meeting today (September, 5th) will discuss the Referendum Act. He says the Senate is required to finish reviewing the Act within 90 days.

The election commissioner declines to say whether the referendum will help resolve the political turmoil but says the Election Commission (EC) is ready to arrange the referendum if the Act is passed.
