EC examines qualifications of PM
July 15th, 2008 - 2:08 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
The Election Commission (EC) starts examining the qualifications of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej following the allegation that the premier’s hosting of a cooking tv program is against the constitution.
Election Commissioner Sumeth Ubanisakorn (สุเมธ อุปนิสากร) says the EC meeting today will discuss the premier’s allegation to decide whether he violates the constitution by hosting a cooking tv show “Chim Pai Bon Pai” (ชิมไปบ่นไป). EC’s subcommittee previously unanimously resolved that EC should forward the premier’s case to the Constitutional Court.
Regarding MPs from the People Power party who will submit a petition to remove independent organizations, Mr Sumeth says they have the right to do so but they have to have sound reasons to back their petition. The election commissioner also says EC will set up a subcommittee to inspect MPs from the Democrat party and senators who own shares in media businesses and companies which receive concessions from the government as requested by Deputy Spokesman of the People Power party Suphachai Chaisamut (ศุภชัย ใจสมุทร).
