DPM Somchai affirms spouse not intent on starting new political partyAugust 5th, 2008 - 11:36 am ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Somchai Wongsawat (สมชาย วงศ์สวัสดิ์) denied rumors that his spouse, Mrs. Yaowapa Wongsawat (เยาวภา วงศ์สวัสดิ์), would be establishing a new political party.
Mr. Somchai indicates that his wife is among 1 of 111 former Thai Rak Thai Party members who have had their political powers revoked and is therefore lacking in the necessary qualifications to establish a new party. The Deputy Prime Minister said that he did not start the rumors, and that the individuals who did were likely hoping for financial gain. He affirms that his wife is not involved in politics at the moment.
Mr. Somchai also believes that the incident in which a close personal acquaintance of the Prime Minister allegedly paid 10 million baht for a government post could be resolved among senior members of the People Power Party within a few days time.
