The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, MD. Surapong Suebwonglee (สุรพงษ์ สืบวงศ์ลี) is preparing to hold a meeting with the Ministry of Commerce, Bureau of the Budget, the National Economic and Social Development Board, and the Bank of Thailand in order to conclude Thailand’s economic progress in the first 6 months of the year, following the government’s public cost burden alleviation plans, and private sector assistance plans.
The meeting will also determine Thailand’s economic direction in the last 6 months of 2008, including measures to rehabilitate the nation’s economy. The Minister of Finance will also meet with the Bank of Thailand Governor to discuss how to best align the government and the bank’s fiscal and monetary policies.
The Deputy Prime Minister affirms that the government has no plans to intervene in the Bank of Thailand’s work process due to ethical concerns. MD. Surapong believes that an upcoming meeting of the BOT Monetary Policy Committee will result in a decision to raise interest rates.
