Democrat leader says border negotiations should be more fruitful following Cambodian electionJuly 24th, 2008 - 10:51 am ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
The Democrat Party leader, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, comments on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)’s postponement to receive the Cambodian request for intervention regarding the disputed border near Preah Vihear Temple, saying he still believes that the matter can be resolved through negotiation. He says he does not believe that this problem requires the involvement of other nations.
Mr. Abhisit also reminds that both Thailand and Cambodia have already agreed to continue their discussions. He says the negotiation should be easier and would lead to a satisfactory resolution, following the general election in Cambodia.
The Democrat leader however criticizes that negotiations on the Thai side have been fruitless because they lack a clear strategy. He says success would require unified efforts from several ministries, especially the Ministry of Foriegn Affairs, and the Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Mr. Samak Sundaravej, needs a larger role in the Preah Vihear case.
