Army reports violent insurgent activity occurring twice daily in restive southAugust 4th, 2008 - 10:10 am ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
Army Spokesman and Information Division Director of the Internal Security Operations Command, Region 4, Col. Akara Tiparote (อัคร ทิพโรจน์ ), reveals that insurgency continues in the three southern border provinces, with violent incidents reported at least twice a day, mostly in the same areas of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat.
Col. Akara believes that the recent bout of insurgent activity may be a form of retaliation in response to the recent arrest of several insurgent leaders by authorities. The Army Spokesman assured the public that a recent bombing incident in Songkhla is not indicative of an increased insurgent presence in the province.
Independent news sources report 45 incidents of unrest from July 16 to 31, with 53 injuries, and 14 fatalities. Pattani province experienced the most numerous incidents at 18. The total number of fatalities at a result of the southern unrest from 2003 is 3,191.
