Royal Thai Army Commander General Anupong Paojinda (อนุพงษ์ เผ่าจินดา) acting as the Chairman of the Joint Committee, stated that the committee has followed the People’s Alliance for Democracy’s ongoing rally as well as the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD) in preparation to react to any incident that may take place between the two. General Anupong assured that the rallies are legal as long as demonstrators use peaceful means and do not resort to the use of weapons. He asked that the demonstrators remain stationed at their rally sites and not to parade as to avoid any clashes with the opposition rallies. The army commander stated that his committee would continue to speak with rally groups to seek a resolution to the situation.
General Anupong gave his personal opinion on newly elected Prime Minister-to-be Somchai Wongsawat stating that he should be able to bring resolution to the national situation. The commander also commented that the military will not interfere with the selectin of the Defense Minister as it is the Prime Minister’s choice.
