Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry to submit requests of sericulture farmers to Cabinet
August 9th, 2008 - 10:54 am ICT by Amrit RashmisrisethiAgriculture and Cooperatives Minister Somsak Prissananthakul (สมศักดิ์ ปริศนานันทกุล) will submit three requests of sericulture farmers to the Cabinet.
The minister says after a meeting with the sericulture association committee and representatives of small sericulture farmers that the association has requested the ministry to cut the import tax of silk thread to 10%. However, the minister says the tax cut request to 10% is unlikely as the tax will be reduced to 0% as required by the country’s free trade agreements. The import tax of silk thread is 5% at present.
The minister therefore advises the farmers to adjust themselves and develop silk production to increase their competitiveness. As for the problem of silk thread smuggling, Mr Somsak says the ministry will inform the Ministry of Finance about the problem and will step up measures to inspect imported silk thread.
Mr Somsak also encourages the small sericulture farmers affected by the high domestic silk thread price situation to participate in a project under the Foundation for Promotion of Supplementary Occupation and Related Techniques of Her Majesty Queen. The project can buy all silk thread of the farmers at reasonable prices.
