Website users create internet script in attempt to reach 1,000,000 followers first
April 16th, 2009 - 2:43 pm ICT by admin ( 30 comments )San Francisco, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) – Users of the website 4chan, an English-language image and discussion board launched in 2003, have created a script which enables them to create thousands of Twitter accounts and make them follow a certain Twitter user.
The reason given on the website forum is to get one million followers before the news network CNN or Ashton Kutcher does, who have challenged each other to get one million followers first.
“Honestly, if either of them win, the entire internet f***ing loses,” a user wrote on the 4chan discussion board. “What say we miraculously beat them to the punch with an all-new account?”
The forum is encouraging its members to run a script which creates random usernames although they still have to enter a security code to prove they are human. The Twitter account being used is “basementdad” which is inspired by Josef Fritzl from Austria, who was recently convicted of sexually abusing his own daughter in his basement for 24 years.
The attempt appears to have started just before 1 a.m. EDT on Thursday morning and had as of 3 a.m. more than 22,500 followers.
Del Harvey, who handles abuse on Twitter, told BNO News they were aware of the action. “We’re aware of it and we’re monitoring the situation,” she said. “It’s not just one person.”
It is unclear if it’s possible for Twitter to stop the attempt, as it involves many users and countless of Twitter accounts. It is also a question if they will succeed to reach one million users in time as both CNN and Ashton Kutcher are both expected to reach the magical number soon.
It appears to be the first attempt of its kind on the social networking website.

People ask us why we decided to use such an inconsiderate scapegoat?
Well, sure, someone in Australia had a hard time. They suffered. We ask ourselves, well, we can’t do a thing to make that better, so why not have a laugh about it?
April 16th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

I’m sorry, but I was browsing the intermachine the other day, and this was most definitely ebaumsworld and not the fine webernet forum of 4chan… You must have your sauce crossed.

This article is misinformed. Ebaumsworld is to blame, not 4chan. I would expect better from a usually good news source like this one

This is why we cant have good things.
April 17th, 2009 at 12:55 am
Firstly Fritzl is australian, not austrian, and secondly it was the Ebaumsworld forum that launched this, not 4chan, they keep trying to steal our thunder.
April 17th, 2009 at 1:10 am
Guys, don’t blame it on Ebuams. We do that when 4chan does something bad, so to pin the blame on Ebuams. This is good. We WANT the credit for this, idiots.
