Sep 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Popular social networking and micro blogging website Twitter has updated its interface and looks set to compete with Facebook instead of Google. Users of Facebook connect with friends and family through text, images and video just like Twitter with the only difference being Facebook’s integrated app.

Kevin Thau, who is the Vice President of Twitter stated that it wasn’t trying to update itself to rival Facebook on the social networking scenario. However Twitter’s only competitor at the moment seems to be Facebook, as it will be very difficult trying to compete in the search engine market with established names such as Yahoo, Google, Ask.com, etc.

Twitter’s search engine system experienced so many problems, that it had to fork out a lot of money to buy a search engine from a third party two years ago.

Facebook has generated success from making the site so interesting that users spend a lot of time there, instead of going elsewhere. Facebook already has half a billion users compared to 150 million users currently on Twitter. Recently Facebook was in the news when it managed to edge out Google and become the website where the Americans spend the most time in a day.

Statistics by alexa.com indicate users spend a mean time of 32 minutes on Facebook compared with Twitter daily.
