download3 Sep 24 (THAINDIAN NEWS) In reports which were issued on Thursday, it was revealed that an estimated sixteen thousand people were killed in cell phone related accidents from the years 2001 to 2007, with 5,870 of those death occurring just in 2008 alone, and experts are saying that the reality could be much higher.

Since this is one of the very first studies which have been conducted to try and deduce the number of distracted driver deaths specifically geared to cell phone usage, it was difficult to give an exact number. The sums suggested that most of these deaths occurred in people who were under 30 years old.

Fernando Wilson and Jim Stimpson of the University of North Texas Health Science Center wrote in the American Journal of Public Health stated, “Our results suggested that recent and rapid increases in texting volumes have resulted in thousands of additional road fatalities in the United States,” according to ‘CapitalBay.com’.

The researchers used reports from the National Highway Safety Administration on the death which were caused by distracted driving, and used details from the accidents, along with cell phone records and data to derive their deductions.
