walkOct 25, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Sony’s iconic cassette tape Walkman is soon going to be history in Japan. The production of the portable music player has been terminated by Sony as its demand has plummeted to a huge extent in the recent years. A spokesperson of the company has confirmed late last week that the final installment of Walkman is already available in Japan and once the last cassette tape is sold, its sale would officially come to an end.

Company officials have stated that although the sale of the Walkman would continue is countries such as China, the decision to stop the production in Japan was taken in the wake of the low demand which is taking a further dip with time. The decision that has been taken by the multi-national company hardly comes as a bolt from the blue given the fact that in today’s high-tech digital world, the iconic portable music player has increasingly become obsolete. Sony’s Walkman was launched in the Japanese market way back in the year 1979 and it turned out to be an instant hit as for the very first time it was able to popularize th concept of music on the move. However, after over thirty years, its popularity now remains limited to the older generation with the advent of iPods and MP3 players.

Incidentally, the news that the iconic Walkman would soon be off the market comes just a day prior to the ninth anniversary of iPod which is considered to be one of the major culprits responsible in its downfall in the market.
