Skype Explains The Root Cause Of Global Service Outage

Dec 23, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Leading VOIP service provider Skype faced the wrath of the users yesterday for an unexpected service failure that lasted for several hours. The company is still struggling to restore the service to normalcy. The company earlier issued its apology via Twitter for the inconvenience caused to the users. Later Skype said in another statement that the service outage was related to a snag with the super nodes in its network and it was termed as a software failure by the company. As per the explanation given by the company the computers that keep the huge network of the company running are refereed to as Super nodes and some of these computers went off line which triggered the failure.
Everyday many of these so called Super nodes are available but on Wednesday a number of them had to be taken offline. This led to the outage fiasco. The company expressed its thanks to the inconvenienced users saying “Thanks for your continued patience while we get everyone back online”. It added that the new super nodes are being readied but some features like group video calling will be made available later. Some users are yet to get their accounts back in shape.
The tech experts have pointed after the outage the repercussion of relying on the VOIP services especially for the business users. The company gets 25 million users online at any time. A number of businesses have switched to VOIP and some of them lost business hours and revenuer owing to the service outage. Apart from voice calling Skype also offers video chat and IM which have found many takers.
