Sex.com sets record for the most expensive domain
February 23rd, 2011 - 3:02 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Feb 22 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Sex.com has officially become the world’s most expensive domain after the Guinness World Records recognized that fact.
The domain was purchased for $13 million in November of 2010. The domain previously belonged to Escom. The deal that saw Clover Holdings become the new owners of the domain name was supervised by the German domain name marketplace, Sedo.com.
Sedo sales director Kathy Nielsen told TechCrunch.com that, “We’re honored that Sedo was trusted with such a high-value and high-profile sale, and we’re ecstatic that it is now being recognized by Guinness World Records as a record-breaking deal.”
Sedo have been involved in other expensive domain takeovers also. The organization supervised the trading off of domains like Vodka.com and Pizza.com. They all proved to be expensive and lucrative deals.
According to the TechCrunch report, there may also been some low profile domain trades in 2010 that might have surpassed the $13 million value that Sex.com was purchased for. What however remains is that Sex.com is now officially the most expensive domain in the world.
Officials of the Guinness World Records entered Sex.com as the “most expensive internet address domain name.”
