botnetSpain, Mar 4, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A huge network of virus infected computers have been busted by the authorities. It is being supposed that the network had been one of the biggest malware groups in the world. An estimate given by the authorities show that the botnet operated in as many as 12.7 computers that it had affected. The botnet that was affecting the computers was programmed to steal data from major companies and banks. It collected confidential information like online banking credentials and information regarding credit cards. The scam has been unveiled by investigators in Spain, who had teamed up with some privately operating computer security firms.

The authorities have been able to capture three people, who they claim are the ringleaders of the group that organized the scam involving the botnet called the Mariposa botnet. It is being expected that this is only the first of the arrests that are likely to be made in various countries around the world. The arrests are also being considered very significant because this is one of the rare instances when the authorities have been able to track down the brains behind organized cyber crime.

Moreover, the operation of the Mariposa botnet is somewhat different from other cyber crimes. The ones who organized this are not merely brilliant hackers, but have connections with the underworld. More frightening is the fact that the three people who have been arrested have no past criminal records, something that lead to the conclusion that they are possibly common Spanish citizens. No information has been provided regarding the convicts. If convicted, they might be sentenced to six months of imprisonment.
