SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) — Oracle on Thursday filed a lawsuit against Internet powerhouse Google Inc., claiming that its popular Android operating system was built on Oracle’s Java software.

In its complaint, Oracle, which is one of the world’s leading technology companies providing open and integrated business software and hardware systems, action for patent and copyright infringement.

“Google’s Android competes with Oracle America’s Java as an operating system software platform for cellular telephones and other mobile devices. The Android operating system software “stack” consists of Java applications running on a Java-based object-oriented application framework, and core libraries running on a “Dalvik” virtual machine that features just-in-time compilation,” the complaint stated.

“In developing Android, Google knowingly, directly and repeatedly infringed Oracle’s Java-related intellectual property. This lawsuit seeks appropriate remedies for their infringement,” said Oracle spokesperson Karen Tillman.

In 2008, Google released Android operating system to compete in the popular smartphone market as well as other portable gadgets.
