Jeopardy! Man vs Machine finale
February 17th, 2011 - 8:28 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York City, Feb 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Machine triumphed over man during the “Jeopardy!” finale.
After three days of contest, IBM’s Watson did beat two former champions of the game. It was a total ‘massacre’ because Watson got three times the amount that the first human had. Watson amassed $77,147 at the end of the game. That figure was way higher than the $21,600 and the $24,000 that Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings had respectively.
To some the machine once again proved that it is superior to humans when it comes to answering trivia questions. Watson was built by IBM who spent four years in building the artificial intelligent supercomputer.
The machine has a massive structure. It uses two freezers to cool the 2,800 processors that churn out about 80 teraflops per second. The machine was also fitted with 16 terabytes of memory.
IBM acknowledged that developing a computer to compete in a game like Jeopardy! was not as trivial as developing a computer to compete in chess.
The lead manager of the project David Ferrucci said that, “It’s a much different kind of problem. Chess was very challenging for the time due the mathematics. This was a very different type of program. It’s not finite problem or a well-defined space. You are dealing with ambiguity, and the contextual nature of language.”
