Sep 22 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Hewlett Packard and Oracle have announced that they have reached a deal that will see former Oracle chief Mark Hurd assume his new role as co-president of Oracle.

Hurd’s appointment was challenged by HP, who argued that their former president could disclose critical secrets that will give Oracle unfair advantage. The company sued Hurd and compelled the court to enforce a confidentiality clause that Hurd signed as the president of HP.

With the new agreement comes the understanding that the two parties have found a way to protect HP’s interest.

However that might not be the case wholly because Oracle has announced its ambition to become a one-stop shop for hardware and enterprise level software. This places Oracle in direct market competition with HP. The appointment of Hurd fueled speculation that Oracle was having HP as its target as it launches its ambition.

There is however speculations that Oracle is not after HP but has its eye set on IBM. To achieve that, a merger with HP will be necessary to do that.

With the acquisition of HP, Oracle will be poised to pose a better challenge in the hardware and network market. The company is already a major player in the enterprise software industry and a strong presence in the hardware market will help its cause.
