Internet bosses approve .xxx Internet address for porn websites
June 25th, 2010 - 7:00 pm ICT by BNO NewsBRUSSELS (BNO NEWS) — The company that oversees Internet addresses on Friday approved the .xxx top-level domain after a long battle by the online red-light district.
ICM Registry had called on the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which oversees the Internet, to create a specific Web address for online adult entertainment for more than six years. ICANN, however, repeatedly denied the requests.
“It’s been a long time coming, but I’m excited about the fact that .xxx will soon become a reality. This is great news,” said ICM Registry Chairman Stuart Lawley.
An independent review recently declared that ICANN’s previous decision in 2007 to deny .xxx was wrong, saying it did not deal fairly with the application. ICANN then decided to reopen the bid.
Lawley said it will now work with ICANN to complete the expedited due diligence on its technical and financial qualifications and to finalize the contract to run .xxx. “Our expectation is that this step will proceed smoothly and will not impede the roll-out of .xxx and we expect to go live with .xxx domains at the start of 2011, if not sooner,” he said. “We have 110,000 pre-reservations and expect that number to increase now that ICANN has formally approved our application.”
The .xxx domain will provide a new place online for adult entertainment providers, who now usually use the .com domain. Critics, however, say that adult content providers will likely stick with .com.
ICANN said it would discuss the developments at a news conference in Brussels on Friday afternoon. It said it would also discuss the implementation of internationalized domain names, with the addition of another major world language set to be announced.
Online pornography is a vast industry, with “sex” being the number one search term in the world. The most visited adult content website, according to Alexa, is livejasmin.com - a video chat community mainly used for live sex shows.
The second most visited adult content website is Youporn, where users can watch streamed clips and upload their own videos. Other top websites include XNXX Galleries, Adult Friend Finder, Streamate, Freeones and debonairblog.com.
