Google unveils Instant Previews, a new visual search result
November 10th, 2010 - 1:50 am ICT by BNO NewsMOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) — Google On Tuesday unveiled its new service of visual search result Instant Previews that adds image-based snapshots to web search results.
Instant Previews provides a graphic overview of a search result and highlights the most relevant sections, allowing users to find the desired page as quick and easy as turning the page in a magazine.
As search results appear on screen, users have to click once on the magnifying glass next to the title of the search result and a visual overview of the page will appear on the right. The service is also available for users that no longer use a mouse to surf the web as hitting the right arrow key will show the preview and the down arrow key will keep browsing.
According to Google, tests showed that people using Instant Previews are about 5 percent more likely to be satisfied with they results they click. This new service provide new ways to evaluate search results as it allows to find pages containing what you are looking for.
Instant Previews provides a visual comparison among the search results that allow users to decide which page looks has the information, maps, charts, images or list without wasting much more time opening each page.
The new Google Instant feature is possible due to the speed in which the previews are shown. In the past, downloading an image could take 20 or 30 seconds. Instant Preview usually shows the images within one-tenth of a second.
The fast results are possible as the query is matched with an index of the entire web, identifying the relevant parts of each web page, stitch them together and serve the resulting preview completely customized to the user’s search.
The new feature, Instant Previews, is free and ready to use and should be available in more than 40 languages in the next few days.
