Google announces fiber network experiment (Update)

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) – Google on Wednesday announced an experiment to develop high-speed Internet.
Google plans to develop and test ultra-high-speed broadband networks in different trial locations across the U.S., which will provide Internet speed 100 times faster than the average American has access to today. With competitive pricing, Google plans to offer “fiber-to-the-home connections” with a one gigabyte per second rate.
Their national project plans to encourage developers to rethink their possibilities for new applications with access to a bigger broadband, as well as operating in an “open-access” environment where users will be able to choose different service providers.
Last year, Google officially submitted a nationwide internet broadband project to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which basically proposed the following: the installation of broadband fiber as part of every federally-funded infrastructure project, the deployment of broadband fiber to every library, school, community health care center, and public housing facility in the U.S., the creation of incentives for providers to install multiple lines of fiber as new networks are rolled out, and the encouragement of greater wireless broadband and a reduction of barriers to deployment.
Google claims the purpose of this project is to “experiment and learn” as they are currently searching for interested communities to participate in the development of the project, welcoming responses from local governments or members of the public.
“Big broadband creates big opportunities. This significant trial will provide an American testbed for the next generation of innovative, high-speed Internet apps, devices, and services,” FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said. “The FCC’s National Broadband Plan will build upon such private-sector initiatives and will include recommendations for facilitating and accelerating greater investment in broadband, creating jobs and increasing America’s global competitiveness,” he added.
